Peterson’s father is a master bladesmith. Peterson began learning the craft at 10 years old — eventually leading to him start Mike’s Damascus Knives, LLC.

Class participants forge a blade out of 5160 high carbon tool steal using the old-fashioned coke forge process, as well as hand and mechanical hammer techniques, grinding, heat treatments, oil treatments, handle preparation with hand sanding and polishing and knife assembly.

Forging is a manufacturing process involving the shaping of metal using localized compressive forces. The blows are delivered with a hammer or a die. Forging is often classified according to the temperature at which it is performed – cold forging, warm forging, or hot forging

Peterson specializes in handmade Damascus steel and all blades are forged into shape using traditional methods and tools. The styles Peterson includes – drop point hunter, bowies, daggers, letter openers, uloo, swords neck knives, throwing knives, hatchets and green river style skinner. The handles are micata, water buffalo, horns and antlers, as well as exotic and domestic wood.

“In addition to the single day classes, I will also be offering two-day advanced class in the fall of 2019 where attendees will make a cable Damascus billet and forge a knife from the billet,” said Peterson. “In addition, I am in the process of writing a book I hope to publish in 2020, so there are a lot of good things still to come.”
