Rumor: Intel Plans Desktop CPU Price Cuts—A Gambit Against AMD?

Intel (INTC) is currently in a tough spot as rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) prepares to launch its 7 nm (nanometer) Ryzen CPUs (central processing unit) on July 7. Taiwan’s DigiTimes, citing sources familiar with the matter, has reported that Intel recently informed PC and motherboard manufacturers of its plans to slash the prices of its eighth- and ninth-generation Coffee Lake desktop CPUs by 10%–15%. The source didn’t mention which CPUs these price cuts will apply to or when the new prices will come into effect. It’s also unclear whether the price cuts will be for Intel’s original equipment manufacturers (who buy in bulk), for its boxed retail units, or for both. The last year has been tough for Intel. It’s undergone management changes, its 10 nm products have been delayed until the end of 2019, competition from AMD has picked up, it’s faced CPU supply shortages, and the performances of its x86 CPUs have been hit by hardware security flaws such as Spectre, Meltdown, and Spoiler. Adding to Intel’s troubles, the US-China trade war has dampened hopes of a rebound in the PC and server markets. All these factors have seen Intel stock rise less than 1% YTD (year-to-date), wherea...

(Photo: Craig Byron)  The works of Houston-based mosaic artist Jonathan Brown are often found in hospitals. Just recently, at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford in Palo Alto, California, a new work was installed titled Balancing Act (2019). The colorful, sizable work shows a group of children (one of whom is in a wheelchair) on the right side of the painting confronting an elephant to the left. In line with hospital policy, the children in the image are all racially diverse. What seems to scream from this work is an attitude of curiosity and confrontation with the unknown. This takes on an ambitious connotation in a hospital setting. The image is both narrative and tactile, kid-friendly and metaphysical. It literalizes the phrase “an elephant in a dark room” but it turns on a lightswitch. In the jungles of the unconscious, sometimes an elephant is just an elephant (but not always). Amazon Echo Dot with Clock vs. the Google Home Mini

Google and Amazon have seesawed in the affordable smart speaker market. While the original Echo Dot ($50 at Amazon) jumpstarted Alexa’s early adoption rates, Google’s Mini smart speaker soon outpaced it in terms of sound quality — a huge feature, considering one of the most common uses for smart speakers is listening to music. But last year, with the 3rd Generation Echo Dot, Amazon reclaimed ground, achieving parity with the Google Home Mini ($49 at Walmart). Now at its September event, Amazon has gone back on the offensive, announcing a new Dot featuring a digital clock on its face and a $10 price bump to a total of $60. A digital clock might seem like a small addition to a smart speaker like the Echo Dot, but Amazon is clearly crafting an affordable speaker for everyday use: one that answers the most common questions and solves the most common problems — all in the most efficient package. As Amazon’s Senior VP of Amazon Devices and Services Dave Limp explained during the event, users asked Alexa for the time of day over a billion times per year. A digital display makes answering such a basic question as simple as a glance, and importantly for Amaz...

Bosch drives forth intelligent electric baby stroller

Posted by Petra Wiesmayer | Sep 10, 2019 | Tags: baby carriage, Bosch, electric drive, electric mobility Electric mobility is clearly on the rise. E-cars, e-buses, e-bikes, e-scooters – and now also e-strollers. The German electric-giant Bosch and the Swedish baby carriage manufacturer Emmaljunga are launching an intelligent stroller with electric drive. According to a survey conducted byBosch among parents with a child from zero to four years of age, and expectant parents, more and more people are looking for electric support for baby carriages. Nine out of ten parents think comfort and safety are the most important criteria when buying a stroller. One might wonder, who needs a stroller that doesn’t have to be pushed manually because it is powered by a motor? But the inventors emphasize that the e-stroller is by no means about laziness. “Basically, the Bosch eStroller system can increase the comfort and safety of everyday life and excursions for all parents,” explains Johannes Kähm, Product Manager for the eStroller at Bosch. “Of course, the advantages of the system come into their own on hilly ground. But even in very windy areas, such as on the coast, the system can be an eno...

Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia looks on from his four wheeler during their joint training camp

Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia looks on from his four wheeler during their joint training camp practice with the New England Patriots at their team headquarters in Allen Park, on Monday, August 5, 2019. (Mike Mulholland | MLive.com) ALLEN PARK — There will be an extra member of the Detroit Lions joining the team in Houston this week. The second-year head coach has been using the all-black ATV to maneuver practice while recovering from offseason leg surgery. He used a golf cart during the first two days of camp, but ditched it for the four-wheeler, which offers better driving and a higher perch from which to coach during practice. Patricia said he’ll use the golf cart at practice on Tuesday morning while his ATV is sent to Houston. The Lions will practice this week with the Texans ahead of their exhibition on Saturday night at NRG Stadium. “I’ll be on the golf cart today,” Patricia said, “but I think the ATV is en route. Hopefully it’s on the truck and not some guy driving it by himself.” Patricia is prohibited from using the ATV during games, per NFL rules. In the preseason opener against New England, he constructed a perch behind the water coolers from which to c...

Understanding the ‘Science’ of Color : Plastics Technology

And as with all sciences, there are fundamentals that must be considered to do color right. Here’s a helpful start. When enumerating the advantages of using plastics over other materials such as metals, ceramics, and wood, one of the items that inevitably comes up is molded-in color. Even in industries like automotive that still rely on painting plastics, the long-term objective is to achieve the desired finish and durability with molded-in color. The plastics industry has touted this advantage for such a long time that we frequently do not consider the intricacies and potential problems that can arise when incorporating color into a polymer. But there is a science to this process; and as with all sciences, there are fundamentals that must be observed if things are to work properly. In this article we will briefly review these fundamentals and discuss the things that we observe when we fail to adhere to them. There are several key items that are essential in developing a colorant package for any polymer. The first of these is the avoidance of any chemical incompatibility between the chemistry of the polymer and the chemistry of the colorant system. Chemical reactions proceed mo...

China’s crackdown on polluting factories helps boost demand for Chin Well’s fasteners

INVESTING in carbon steel fastener maker Chin Well Holdings Bhd is much like buying bonds, contends executive director Tsai Chi-Yun. “The good thing about investing in our business is it is like buying bonds. Sales are relatively stable because no matter what happens, there is a constant level of demand for fasteners as carbon steel fasteners can be applied to many parts of our lives,” Tsai explains in a recent interview with The Edge. However, demand for fasteners is projected to pick up this year because of two main factors: less competition from China because of a clampdown on non-environmental friendly factory operations and stronger demand on the back of an economic recovery in Europe. Chin Well’s annual report shows that sales to Europe for the financial year ended June 30, 2017 (FY2017) fell 8.5% to RM239.62 million, from RM261.92 million in FY2016. The European region accounted for 46% of the group’s RM521.29 million revenue, followed by Malaysia (37%). On the supply side, she says, prior to 2017, the production costs for local manufacturers were a fourth more than Chinese manufacturers because of environmental compliance. This was made worse by cheaper Chinese supplies...

Ask the Nutritionist: Should I be worried about my baby’s rash?

I really like the column and want to ask about my baby’s rash. It started under the diaper and spread to the tummy and inside of legs and really bothers her (17 months old). She scratches a lot and is fussy about having it touched and even tries to take clothing off to keep from touching it. She also has a very bad body odour. My husband says don’t worry, it’s just a rash. The doctor has prescribed a zinc ointment and told me it might develop into eczema and need steroid cream but I don’t want to use that if there is something natural I can do. Can you please give me your opinion. Do you think this could be diet? While it’s rather common to see babies with a rash on the bottom due to irritating urine and sometimes fecal matter next to the skin for prolonged periods, a baby with a rash that does not go away, an open or weeping rash, a rash in or around the mouth, a rash on the face, or a rash on the trunk or limbs can be a serious early warning sign of underlying nutritional concerns. Digestive problems often manifest early through rashes on the skin, and ignoring rashes can have long term ramifications for a baby’s overall health. I would bet your baby also has some history of d...
