Lone Tree Brewing explains move from bombers to cans as part of its growth trajectory

Lone Tree Brewing is discontinuing its 22-oz bomber program in favor of 12-oz cans — unveiling the first two beers from its Branching Out and Hoppy Little Trees Project series in cans this week. The brewery says this is just one part of the evolution of its growth trajectory for 2019. Last year, the brewery increased brewhouse production by 40 percent, year-over-year. The increase in production led to the addition of four new 40-bbl fermentation tanks, as well as a new can labeling machine. “With the addition of a labeling machine for small batch canning runs, we will be able to bring some of our more experimental beers to thirsty beer drinkers across our distribution networks in a more portable format,” said Dennis Stack, director of sales and marketing at Lone Tree Brewing Co. Pineapple Sour, the brewery’s first beer coming out of the Branching Out series, made its debut in the Lone Tree tasting room just in time for Memorial Day weekend. At a sessionable 4.5-percent ABV, this refreshingly crisp blonde ale is tart with a subtle pineapple finish. Only available in cans, this sour is perfect for any outdoor activity. The Pineapple Sour belongs to Lone Tree’s Branching Out ser...

Avoid bike theft this summer, know how to lock your bike

A quick guide for keeping your bike secure this summer: how to lock your bike with theft prevention in mind. This conversation is moderated according to USA TODAY’s community rules. Please read the rules before joining the discussion. There are few better ways to zip around Burlington on a summer day than on two wheels. While it may feel more relaxed with all the cycling company, it’s still a good idea to take precautions when locking your bike in public and at your home. Most hobbyists don’t have waterjets in their garage, but they would if they could! A Waterjet (or Water

Most hobbyists don’t have waterjets in their garage, but they would if they could! A Waterjet (or Water Jet Cutter) is a marvelous tool. Simply mount a high-pressure stream of grit and water on an x-y gantry, and the pressure generates enough erosion to cut through just about any thin material. Unfortunately, claiming your own waterjet will erode away a nice big hole in your pocketbook too. Machines up to this point start at about $75K, not to mention that they’d claim the better part of your workspace in a two-car garage. Most of us everyday hackers that want to play with the benefits of this tool send their parts out to a professional shop. Consequently, we don’t often hear about everyday hackers using waterjets, or waterjet-cut parts all that often, with one exception. Back in 2014, a crew of students from UPENN built a functional waterjet with a parts-list that could make it affordable for about $5000. Now that same team is back. This time, they’ve spun together not just a one-off, but a fully-featured product called Wazer, which just launched its Kickstarter campaign minutes ago and has already nearly quadrupled the $100k goal. How could it do that? The full package starts ...

Blu announces Vivo XL3 and XL3 Plus, but you shouldn’t buy them

Blu is best known for its large variety of budget Android phones – some good, some not so good. Today the company announced two new devices – the Vivo XL3 and Vivo XL3 Plus. But unlike most of Blu’s lineup, they aren’t a good value at all, unless you buy one of them on sale. First up is the lower-end model, the Vivo XL3. The MSRP is $179.99, but for “a limited time,” you can get it for $109. Honestly, the sale price is about as much as I’d pay for it. The highlight feature is the 5.5-inch 18:9 display, but it’s still 720p. The MediaTek processor isn’t great either. On the plus side, you do get Android 8.0 Oreo, which still hasn’t arrived on many budget devices. The 3,000mAh battery should easily last a day or two as well. The Vivo XL3 Plus is priced at $199.99, but like the cheaper model, you can get it for $129.99 while supplies last. It has a beefier Snapdragon 425 processor, with a matte aluminum design instead of glossy metal. Unfortunately, the XL3 Plus is a downgrade in almost every other regard. It has a larger 6-inch 18:9 screen, but with the same resolution of 720p. That is definitely not a “vivid cine...

Many consider press brake tooling a minor accessory in metal forming when in fact the opposite

Many consider press brake tooling a minor accessory in metal forming when in fact the opposite is true. Although press brakes have evolved into multiaxes, high-precision machines with self-stabilizing features, the tooling is all that ever actually touches the part during bending (see Figure 1).The line has blurred between RFA, New Standard, European, and American standard tooling. Many features needed for high-performance bending have migrated to all the various tooling types. Regardless of which tooling and clamping style you choose, be sure it meets at least a few minimum requirements.High precision. The tools should be manufactured to tolerances within the 0.0004-inch range. This is critical to achieve part accuracy without shimming or other tweaks during setup.Segmented sections. These allow you to build various lengths out of several precut pieces. Small pieces are safer and easier to handle too.Self-retaining installation. You should be able to load the tools with the ram up. The toolholding system should hold multiple pieces in place until the clamping pressure is applied (see Figure 2).Self-seating. As clamping pressure is applied, the punches are mechanically pulled up...

Pryce’s right: Giwa-Osagie breaks program record in high jump, powers Metea Valley to first sectional title

Pryce Giwa-Osagie was right and he set the bar high Thursday for a Metea Valley team ready to make history. Giwa-Osagie is a senior in only his second year in the sport. He won the high jump at the Class 3A St. Charles North Sectional by clearing program-record 6 feet, 6 inches. It also was a personal record. It was completed early in the meet and set the tone for the Mustangs, who went on to score 81.5 points to win the program’s first sectional title. Runner-up Batavia had 76 points. Geneva (72), Dundee-Crown (56), St. Charles East (54) and Kaneland (51) rounded out the top six teams. “It’s been a challenging spring, but this warm weather gave us a chance to show what we’re made of,” Metea coach Aaron Lewis said. “This is a really special group.” The Mustangs had two relays and six individuals qualify for state, with senior Temi Osobamiro (long jump, triple jump, 800 relay) and junior Virgil Steward (100, 200, 800 relay) each advancing in three events. Giwa-Osagie transferred last year from Naperville North, where he had played volleyball. He had an American history class with Lewis, who recruited the 6-foot-5 Giwa-Osagie for the indoor track season. “It came naturally to m...

Huntingdon Valley’s June Fete: Rides, funnel cake, and 100-plus years of history

The field at the intersection of Huntingdon and Edge Hill Roads in Huntingdon Valley sits empty nearly all year, the doors of a lone white barn locked. All is quiet until June arrives. That’s when, for a fleeting week, a sea of red-and-white tent tops overtakes the grassy 40 acres of land. Hundreds of volunteers flock to these grounds to set up the dozen or so candy cane-striped booths for June Fete, one of this Montgomery County community’s largest annual events. The country fair returns this weekend, June 7 through 9. Starting Friday, amid the lush, spring-green horizons, this field plays host to kids strapped in for dragon rides, couples taking in views atop a lit-up Ferris wheel, thrill-seekers flipping upside down in the stomach-dropping Zipper, and families enjoying fresh-fried funnel cake. June Fete looks comparable to any carnival, perhaps with a little more surrounding wildlife. But look past the rides, food, and games and you’ll see years and years of history — all centered on a do-good mission to raise money for the local hospital. If you go: 4 to 11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, 2990 Edge Hill Rd., Huntingdon Valley, $5, free for ch...
