I cannot remember not carrying a backpack when I travel, because they combine flexible storage and organization with packability (under seat or in overhead bins) while offering the easiest, least strenuous and most versatile means of carrying stuff (just try rolling your wheeled bag down a snow covered street, across cobblestones or up and over all the footbridges of Venice). But over the years I’ve carried and tested a lot of different models and styles and I still switch up from trip to trip, because there is no one perfect bag. Instead there is a perfect bag for each kind of traveler and each kind of trip, depending whether you need to carry more, work more efficiently or have ot...

Spending time in the backcountry requires a vehicle equipped to handle rugged, off-road terrain, but not all vehicles are ready-made for adventure. Instead of shelling out the money for a second ride, adventurers can turn most trucks, SUVs, crossovers or vans into suitable, entry-level off-roaders with some aftermarket modifications. Everything from all-terrain tires and skid plates to an upgraded suspension or lift kit are wise investments for anyone looking to get into the lifestyle. But knowing where and how to get started isn’t as simple as referencing a vehicle’s owner’s manual. To help, we’ve compiled a list of eight modifications capable of giving any vehicle some off-road oomph. Editor’s note: Keep in mind that aftermarket modifications that significantly alter a vehicle may void its warranty. Refer to a vehicle’s specific warranty guidelines, or any information via a dealer or manufacturer, before making major changes. Big-brand tire manufacturers are a good place to start but don’t be deterred from test-fitting tires at junkyards or looking into independent retailers. Price point: Expect to spend anywhere from $500 to upward of $1,000 for a good set of all-terrain tire...

As you age, you might find it harder to balance and have stability in your joints,

As you age, you might find it harder to balance and have stability in your joints, making you more prone to injury. The good news is that you can help prevent and reduce these muscle imbalances by strengthening your legs—namely your inner thighs. Nicole Blades, a NASM-certified personal trainer based in Connecticut, says: “Your adductors—the muscles in your inner thighs—are responsible for inner rotation of the leg. Together with the abductors—the external rotators of the glutes—they support the pelvis, helping you to stabilize when you walk, run, or cycle.” Before you dive into the inner thigh exercises below, note that Blades says targeting one specific muscle group in the body isn’t possible. “There is no such thing as spot training or focusing on one particular body part alone in order to reshape or define that specific area. If your goals include stronger, firmer legs, you’ll need to rely on a combo platter of strength training exercises,” Blades explains. Working your inner thighs as well as your outer thighs and glutes is key to having greater overall strength in your lower body and reducing your risk of injury. “Having under-acti...

Back to Basics: How to Improve Vertical Turbine Pump Reliability through Optimum Bearing Selection

How to Improve Vertical Turbine Pump Reliability through Optimum Bearing Selection When applying vertical turbine pumps on liquids that contain solids, abrasives and/or air, a consideration is the selection of the bearing material and/or construction, given that the bearings are immersed in and lubricated by the fluid pumped during most typical applications. Vertical turbine pumps (VTPs) offer many unique advantages for many applications. For instance, the vertical construction takes up little floor space; priming problems can be avoided due to submersion of the impellers in liquid; the first stage impeller can be lowered (by increasing the pit depth, if necessary) to provide the desired NPSH margin; multistage construction and midrange specific speeds offer high efficiencies; and modular construction allows the pumps to be customized for many applications. VTPs are available in deep well, wet pit (short setting or close-coupled), canned, and submersible motor configurations. Accordingly, my September 2008 column on the advantages and cautions of using VTPs on water and wastewater applications concentrated primarily on cavitation, vibration and axial thrust, as well as how to av...

View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20190605006033/en/ The University of L’Aquila, Sumitomo Electric, and Optoscribe have jointly deployed the world’s first multi-core fiber (MCF) testbed for space-division multiplexed*1 (SDM) fiber-optic communications in a real-field environment in the city of L’Aquila, as part of INCIPICT project.[1,2] An MCF is an optical fiber with multiple cores in a glass cladding and is considered one of the most promising SDM transmission technologies to overcome the limitations of conventional single-core fiber communication systems. For INCIPICT, Sumitomo Electric fabricated two types*2 [3–5] of uncoupled MCFs and one type*3 of coupled MCFs with a standard glass diameter of 125 µm*4 (details in Table 1). Jaguar’s I-Pace is a sleek and powerful beast — with a fatal flaw | Ireland

Jaguar’s new I-Pace looks great and prowls the mean streets with aerodynamic ease, but its fast-charging system doesn’t link up with the older ESB network — so it died on me Jaguar’s I-Pace has a problem. It’s not the styling, which is great. Nor is it the range, which is up there with any electric vehicle (EV) we’ve driven. The issue is to do with fast charging. Any time I tried hooking up to one of the ESB’s public DC chargers, nothing happened. I tried three stations within a 20km stretch of the M1 north of Dublin and got zilch. Not an amp. Zero juice. As John Cleese might put it, my big cat was bereft of life. Apparently it’s a firmware problem with older chargers, where the combined charging system connector fails to complete a “handshake” protocol required for charging to commence. 12-Foot-Tall Skeleton 3D Printed for Mexican Festival of Lights in Guadalajara

The Mexican 3D printing service Moti Digital used a Massivit 1800 3D printer to create a 12-foot-tall skeleton structure. The installation was showcased during the Mexican Festival of Light celebrations in Guadalajara. Known as the birthplace of tequila and mariachi music, the western metropolis of Guadalajara is a hotbed for Mexican culture and festivities. The most recent cause for celebration was The Mexican Festival of Light, a four-day event in the city that explores the harmony between light and artwork. Last week, at the city’s popular Plaza Tapatía, thousands of visitors were greeting a lofty and lovable skeleton installation.  The 12-foot-tall sack of bones was 3D printed by Moti Digital to celebrate the Mexican Festival of Light. The sculpture appears to be emerging out of the plaza fountain, and is illuminated at night for all to see. This 3D printed skeleton measures a whopping 8.40m in length and 3.60m in height. Although the towering structure sounds quite intimidating, it has a warm and welcoming smile strapped across its bony face. Thousands of festival attendees sat in the arms of the display, sharing photos on social media and generating a large amount of buzz....
